South Kirkby family centre could become specialist school for up to 40 children

A family centre in South Kirkby could be used as a specialist school for children with special educational needs under an application submitted to Wakefield Council.

Illuminate Care Group has applied for a certificate of lawfulness to use St Luke’s Family Centre, on Barnsley Road, as an educational establishment providing specialist SEN education.

The application seeks confirmation that the proposed change from a place of public worship and religious instruction to an educational establishment is lawful.

No building work or physical alterations are proposed.

In a planning statement submitted with the applicant said the change would not amount to development requiring planning permission.

The statement says the school could accommodate up to 40 children, with approximately 23 to 30 members of staff.

It is expected to operate for around 38 weeks a year during term time, with pupils arriving from about 9.30am and being collected from around 2.30pm.

There would be no residential accommodation or overnight occupation under the plans.
