Town’s war memorial restored in time for Remembrance Day

Work to restore Castleford’s war memorial in time for Remembrance Day has been completed following a heritage group’s campaign.

Faded lettering on the monument on Powell Street has been repainted and weeds around the site were cleared as part of the project by Castleford Civic Society.

Unite the Union, Castleford and District Naval Association and society members provided donations for the work.

Kathryn Stainburn, the society’s heritage lead, said: “The war memorial desperately needed some tender loving care.

“We weeded around it and then decided to put out an appeal to raise funds for the faded lettering to be renewed.

“The money came in very quickly and the lettering was refreshed last week.

“My father fought in the Second World War and we now have a war memorial that befits the memory of those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the First and Second World Wars, and more recent conflicts.”

Joe Sunderland, on behalf of the Unite branch, said: ‘I am really pleased that myself and my branch of Unite has been able to support the work of Castleford Civic Society in improving our local war memorial. It will look absolutely amazing as we approach Remembrance Sunday.”

“We are proud to make a donation towards this worthwhile project, helping to ensure that one of Castleford’s most important landmarks is looking at its best as we approach Remembrance Sunday.

“It is vital that we continue to honour the memory and sacrifice of those who gave so much for our freedom.”
