Wakefield street to get £3 million makeover

Wakefield District Housing (WDH) is to make improvements to 67 properties on Esther Grove, including an overhaul of the green space with new landscaping, trees replaced and new boundary fences built.

In addition, numerous garages are to be replaced, new entrance and exit gates installed, improvements to public footpaths and paths to the front and rear of properties and car parking hardstanding to be relaid.

The plans have been approved by Wakefield Council planners, with the work to be carried out by developers, Gillespies.

A statement from the Leeds-based firm, which formed part of the planning application, read: “The estate is generally well looked after and in good condition.

“However, it has been identified that the 67 properties owned by WDH would benefit from environmental improvement works to enhance and improve their access, aesthetic and security.

“Additionally, 34 of the 67 properties owned by WDH within the site have an existing garage on their driveway, which vary significantly in quality, appearance and condition.

“Most of the existing boundary treatments are inconsistent in appearance, outdated and in need of repair. Pedestrian spaces and green areas are outdated and in need of repair.

Prior to the plans being approved, the council’s planning officer reported: “The proposal would provide an improvement to the quality of the built environment in this area.

“In conclusion, the proposed development is considered to be acceptable in principle with no technical reasons to withhold planning permission.”
