A Wakefield railway station that was shut down in 1970 could be returned to use

Wakefield MP Imran Ahmad Khan and Wakefield councillors have called for the former Horbury and Ossett railway station to be reopened.

The MP also wants to see a brand new station open in Ossett. The former Horbury station was closed in 1970.

Mr Khan said plans for the stations has been “agreed in concept” by ministers. Meanwhile councillors Darren Byford and Lynn Masterman are working with Matthew Morley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for highways and transport, and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority on the former Horbury station.

However it is understood both campaigns are currently working separately.

Coun Morley said: “We are in early discussions with the West Yorkshire Combined Authority on proposals to provide a new railway station for the residents of Ossett and Horbury.

"These talks are in the very early stages, but these ambitious plans are very much something we wish to look to progress to boost connectivity across our district and the wider region.”
