Work will include replacement cladding, roof improvements and new openings, alongside internal upgrades to parts of the facilities.

Wakefield Council has granted permission for Delta Academies Trust to carry out the work at the Middle Lane site.

A design statement submitted with the application said the refurbishment programme would include “a major renovation of the exterior and interior of the sports hall and its changing rooms”.

The documents said the sports hall was “in poor condition due to historic lack of maintenance and parts cannot be repaired”.

It added: “Cladding is rusting and some sections have been replaced. Elements of the drainage and roof system are failing with buckets and cordoned off areas a permanent fixture within the hall.”
