Staff at Ridings Shopping Centre get on their bikes in run up to Tour De France Yorkshire

Staff and retailers at Wakefield’s Ridings Shopping Centre will be using pedal power to raise cash for Yorkshire Air Ambulance as the Tour De France passes through the region for the first time.

The team will cycle 118 miles – the equivalent of the first leg of the race – on indoor exercise bikes on Friday and Saturday July 4 and 5.

Victoria Clapham, the centre’s marketing manager, said: “With the Tour De France coming to Yorkshire for the first time, we wanted to mark this very special occasion by hosting a charitable stunt in line with the race.

“We’ll all be getting on our bikes to raise funds for the charity and hope shoppers show their support by cheering us on and making a donation. It’s a big challenge, but we hope the team’s combined pedal power will get us over the finish line.”

Shoppers can donate before the event by visiting customer services on the upper mall or during the challenge where collection buckets will be available.
