Double delight for Castleford CC in thrillers with Harrogate and York

Yorkshire Premier League North leaders Castleford CC made it six wins from six in remarkable style with victories over old rivals York and Harrogate in real bank holiday thrillers.

Castleford were able to achieve their win over York despite being bowled out for only 97.

Their poorest batting display of the season did not cost them in the end as York batsmen also struggled and were bowled out one run short in a tense finish.

It was spin that did the trick for Castleford as Ed Morrison took 6-32 and David Wainwright 3-18, but it was tight to the finish with York battling away after being reduced to 43-6 and their last pair putting up resistance until Tom Backhouse was trapped lbw by Wainwright with their score on 96.

Castleford’s innings had seen them slump to 48-5 and recover to 83-5 only to collapse with their last five wickets going down for 14 runs.

In there was a vital knock of 40 from Owen Smith who is looking an outstanding recruit for this season.

Castleford were quickly back in action on Monday at home to Harrogate and another tight finish ensued after the visitors made 176 with Matt Rees taking 4-56 and two wickets each for Hayden Walsh and Morrison.

Castleford were reduced to 50-4 in their reply with big hitter Chesney Hughes and Walsh among the men out and Smith not able to play.

Skipper Scott Hopkinson (40) set about reviving his side, but after they reached 123-4 wickets began to go down again and it was down to the experienced Wainwright to see if he could guide the team home.

He found a willing partner in Nash Charles, but fell for 40 in the third last over, leaving Cas with 12 to get from the last 12 balls and only two wickets left.

That became five needed off the last over, but with another wicket down and the tension ramped up.

All results were possible with the game going right down to the last delivery, but Castleford got home for a potentially huge win over opponents who came into the game in second place. Charles finished not out on 19 with last man Rees on five.
