Horbury Town gearing up for second season in NCE League’s top flight
Horbury Town will start their second season in the NCE League’s Premier Division with a home game later this month.
Town narrowly avoided relegation in their first year in the top flight, but were competitive throughout the season and will be looking to make a positive start when entertaining Parkgate in their first game of the 2026-27 campaign on Saturday, July 25.
This is quickly followed by a first away game at Thackley four days later and Town are also on their travels the following Saturday when due to take on Frickley.
A number of warm-up games have been arranged in a bid to have the team fully match fit in time for the big kick-off.

They are due to begin their pre-season campaign at home to NCE League newcomers Kinsley Boys tonight (Thursday) then host South Leeds on Monday, Pontefract Collieries on July 11 and Marsden on July 13.
Another home warm-up is against Emley on July 18 and two days later they take on their only away friendly when up against Beverley Town.
Manager Darren Barnes cannot wait to get going again and explained how things have been progressing since the end of last season.
He said: “Pre-season so far has been a little different from previous years – but that was needed.
"We’ve had some time away from the ground, working on fitness levels, with sessions at Elevate and also at Scammonden to put the lads through their paces. Now we’re back on the grass working on further fitness, but some ball work too.
"We’re delighted to bring James Humphreys to our coaching/ management staff, replacing Darren Hepworth who moves to Jersey to start a new life. A huge loss to the club and we’ll miss him and his family.
"James brings a wealth of experience and will be a huge asset to the club, on and off the field. James has kept an eye on the club from afar and will no doubt be ensuring that the quality levels improve as well as maximising the work rate of the group.
"In terms of the friendlies, we’ll be taking a look at a group of young individuals who will be looking to impress before selecting a squad of around 22 to move forward with ahead of the 26/27 season.
"We’re hopeful we’ve found some hidden gems and look forward to working with them. We can’t fault their efforts so far.
"More importantly, anyone who’s looking to wear the Horbury shirt this season, will understand everything that we’re about. You can have all the ability in the world but if you’re not the right person, we’re not interested. Culture, community, attitude.”
Barnes is pleased to see more development off the pitch as Horbury look to continue on their upward trajectory.
He added: “I want to say a massive thank you to our volunteers who have kept the club ticking over since the Frickley game at the beginning of April and who have set a really good foundation for the season ahead.
"These people are the real backbone of non-league football and without any of this, nothing would be possible. I’m sure all teams at this level can relate.
"Personally, I can’t wait to get going and welcome our supporters, past and present, back down to the ground. The backing we received last season, especially on the road, in what was a difficult season for us all, was second to none.
"The fanbase is certainly something we can be proud of – we’re always looking to improve our supporter count, however, and feel the stuff we’ve done in the off season so far, will help.
"We can finally announce the opening of our new pitch side cafe open for use. We’ve had nothing but positive reviews on how much more accessible the refreshments are, as well as covered seating within which can be used. The sheltered area at the side of the cabin is also a great place to sit down and enjoy the game.
"The continual progress of our facilities is there to be seen and we will continue to do that, year on year.”
