Late goal denies Ossett United share of spoils after battling effort at Silsden

Assistant manager Jonathan Rimmington believes Ossett United were unlucky to come away with nothing from a battling effort in difficult conditions at Silsden.

Despite Josh Askew’s goal United went down 2-1 and have now gone five games since they last won in the NPL East.

Three of those games were draws, however, including a 2-2 result on a long travel to Guisborough Town in midweek when Youssef Chentou netted two crackers.

After goalless draws in the two home games before that – against Morpeth Town and Hallam – it was a welcome relief to get back to scoring, but the results in a busy October have left Ossett in 15th place in the league, eight points off the play-off places and five clear of the relegation zone.

The wild conditions and driving rain made it tough for the players of both teams in the latest game at Silsden, but United stuck to their task only to lose out to a late goal.

“I think we coped well in certain things, but the weather was horrendous, “ said experienced assistant manager Rimmington, who joined the club in the summer to help James Walshaw’s management team.

"I think it should have been a draw – nobody looked like they were going to score to be honest and we’ve just succumbed to defeat at the end of the day.”

After a goalless first half when Storm Boelo was the most important factor it was United who broke the deadlock as the hosts lost the ball in midfield and Askew charged forward before unleashing a low shot into the corner of the net.

The Cobbydalers were handed a way back when Cole Hyde’s dash into the area saw him brought down and Kayle Price put away the resulting penalty.

Neither side then looked like winning it until six minutes from time when Price was sent clear down the right and fired a shot across the keeper into the net.

Ossett kept going as they looked for an equaliser, but although there were a few nervy moments for the home team with balls into the box Silsden held on.

United are quickly back in action in the West Riding County Cup at Barnoldswick Town on Tuesday before they return to league action at Ingfield against Dunston.
