Elliott Fewster out to inspire youngsters with dyspraxia with his car racing exploits

Pontefract youngster Elliott Fewster has shared how taking up kart and car racing his changed his life after he was diagnosed with dyspraxia.

Elliott, 14, is one of the country’s most promising young drivers and this month will be racing at Brands Hatch in the Junior Saloon Car Championship.

He has already met with success nationally as well as locally and his achievements have come despite his DCD, a condition affecting physical co-ordination.

Elliott has told his story to the Express as he would like to help other children with dyspraxia and also to spread awareness about the disorder as it is invisible.

He is looking to inspire other children who struggle to find their gift, which he did when he joined the racing family.

He said: “I have made so many amazing friends in racing, it has changed my life.

”I have struggled with with every type of sport and school and felt isolated because my confidence was so low. This was until I found karting then car racing.

"I was lucky to l grow up in Pontefract and I had Raceway Karting on my doorstep and also Teamsport in Leeds.

"I won the regional final of the BIKC at Leeds Teamsport in 2020 when I was 12 and it was my first year in adult karts against others who were up to 16 years old.

”My dyspraxia affects me in many ways and I have always been called clumsy so I never thought I would be able to race a car at over 100mph.”

Elliott competed in the national final of Young Driver in 2019 when aged only 11 and was up against other finalists were as old as 16 or 17.

It was another great experience that has helped the Pontefract teenager’s confidence to improve as a driver.

Elliott continued: “As soon as I was tall enough I started to learn to rally drive at the Silverstone Rally school and also at Rally Rides, in Warwickshire.

"As soon as I was 14 in May 2022 I took my ARDS test to become a racing driver at Mallory Park and I competed in my first car race in the JSCC last month at Pembrey.

"In November I am racing at Brands Hatch in the Junior Saloon Car Championship.”
