Lewis Smith remembered in Calder Clarion’s annual memorial race

Cyclists from all over the country took part in a highly successful third running of Calder Clarion CC’s memorial road race.

The race honours the memory of Lewis Smith and has become a poignant event that has captured the hearts of many cyclists.

It is an emotional and terrible time when you lose a beloved son and brother at the very young age of 17. And it is with great admiration and love that Ian and Fran Smith, of Calder Clarion Cycling Club, created a memorial road race, to celebrate the life of their son.

Lewis, an incredibly talented young rider who competed at a high level in both road races and time trials, sadly lost his life shortly before his 18th birthday in 2021. He is still very much missed by his clubmates.

The race in his honour began in 2024 and its third running saw more than 50 riders, not just local, but national, converge on Notton Village Hall to race 50 miles of 15 laps.

The cyclists went off around the lanes of Old Royston, past the Viaduct near Chevet Lane and back to the start and finish at Notton Crossroads.

It was an open race with four categories of rider competing in the one event.

Overall winner was James Calvert, of Prologue Racing Team, with runner-up Harper Johnson, of 360 racing, and third place going to Jack Cook, of Calder Clarion.

The race was organised by Calder Clarion CC and the event was run and mediated by British Cycling.

The event had many sponsors who contributed towards the prize money for the winners.

It was a great success again with some spectacular cycling that can make the clubs proud. Calder Clarion have thanked everyone who came along to race and all the volunteers who make these events happen.
