Pontefract stay perfect after ending Chapel Allerton’s 100 per cent start

Defending champions Pontefract One are the only side with a 100 per cent record after three rounds of the Yorkshire Premier Squash League after they ended Chapel Allerton's unbeaten start to the season.

Newly-promoted Chapel, who lost number one Gabriel Cox to injury on the eve of the match, thrust club stalwart Ross Williamson in at number five and he went down in straight games to Adam Taylor.

Ponte's Tom Bamford won the number four clash against Sanath Sha in similar fashion.

Skipper Matt Godson encountered more resilience from Isaac Green, closing it out 12/10 in the fourth game to seal the hosts' triumph.

David Turner overcame Stan Sykes to add further weight to the scoreline, but Chapel Allerton got themselves on the board in the number one string duel as Aussie Brad Fullick overcame recently retired PSA Tour pro Rory Stewart in four games to soften the victory margin somewhat to 18-4.

Queens, the other unbeaten team before Wednesday night's third round, gave a debut to Commonwealth Games gold medallist Declan James but his stardust could not inspire a home win over Hallamshire as they were beaten 17-6.

Pontefract Two suffered a third straight defeat – this time 19-6 in a late night tussle at mid-table Harrogate – and sit at the bottom of the pile.

There was a 23-year age gap between the first combatants as former world no.20 Chris Simpson, 39, took on 16-year-old Noah Riley in the no.4 rubber.

The more experienced Simpson took it in three, while Harrogate's Alec Fuller also took out Adam Smith in straight games at no.5.

Harrogate's new Spanish signing Hugo Lafuente Jaen sealed the hosts' victory with a four-game triumph over recently retired pro Lwamba Chileshe, but the night was far from over.

Rhys Evans then played out a thrilling five-game epic with Ponte Two’s Paraguayan Francesco Marcantonio which lasted over an hour-and-a-half and finished 16/14 in the fifth to the Welshman.

The third strings did not begin until 10pm and their match was another marathon which Ponte's Chester Dockray won 11/9 in the fifth against Caleb Boy to grab a consolation for the visitors.

Ferriby Hall sit just above Pontefract 2 at the bottom as they also fell to a third defeat of the season, this time 14-8 at home against Dunnington.
