Wakefield Trinity's released forward finds new Super League club with York

After being released by Wakefield Trinity last week Thomas Doyle has quickly been offered another Super League opportunity.

The 27-year-old hooker or loose forward has signed for York Knights and is set to go straight into the squad for their closing games in the 2026 season.

Doyle made 34 appearances for Trinity after joining them from Keighley Cougars ahead of the 2024 season and was a key player in their Championship-winning side.

But following two injury-hit campaigns he was released by Wakefield last week on a mutual agreement in order to find a new club. And he has done exactly that after signing a contract with York that runs until the end of 2027.

His only Super League rugby this year has been two appearances on loan with Bradford Bulls, but he is looking forward to making the most of his new opportunity.

He said: “I’m buzzing to be joining York for the final stretch of the Super League season.

“My main focus now is to hit the ground running, give absolutely everything to the club and finish the year as strongly as possible.

"There is clearly a great group of lads here who are hungry to push themselves and I can’t wait to be a part of that.”

For York boss Mark Applegarth, coaching Doyle is a case of better late than never after he had been looking to link up with him at Wakefield.

He explained: “I’m really glad Doyley has signed and I’m looking forward to working with him.

“I signed him for Wakefield and never actually got a chance to work with him. He’s a tough, no-nonsense player that’s hungry to improve."

On his departure from Trinity director of rugby Ste Mills said: “We’d like to thank Doyley for all his hard work and dedication over the past three seasons. He has been a great professional to have as part of the club’s revival and return to Super League. As a club we wish him well on the next part of his journey.”
