Pontefract lose out to Morley in slugfest played out in testing conditions
Pontefract RUFC could have few complaints after coming back from their trip across West Yorkshire empty handed when they took on a Morley side that has made a good start to the Regional Two North East season.
Both sides went into the match with just one league defeat so far in the 2026-27 season and a place in the top three up for grabs.

Pontefract had been the first team to lower the colours of Moortown the previous week and were in good spirits, but what could have been an entertaining game turned into a slugfest as the cold, rain and windy conditions took effect.
It was home team Morley who came out on top as they recorded a 22-5 victory to stay on the heels on the leaders.
The first five minutes was like watching England in the seventies, as both teams returned kicks one after the other in an attempt to gain territorial advantage.
Ponte’s defence was its usual tenacious self, unfortunately so was their discipline as a heavy penalty count throughout the match, including two yellow cards, constantly put the hosts in good territory.
Despite this, Morley lacked strike power in the face of the adverse conditions and excellent defence. All their tries were ground out from close in from a very well coached outfit, who gave away few penalties and retained the ball very well.
The Maroons scored first, but Ponte replied well to score the try of the day. Liam Kay chipped over the defence for the onrushing Sam Gilbert to make progress before Sam Millard charged over.
No more scores followed in the first half with the sides level 5-5 at the interval.
With the wind behind in the second half, it seemed like a job well done for the visitors. This thought was enhanced early on as they exerted some pressure on the home line, but prop Tom Webley lost possession in the act of scoring after a good catch and drive from a line-out.
From then on Ponte rarely visited the hosts’ 22 as Morley’s heavier pack allowed them to get on the front foot and dictate play.
Ponte’s effort was wholehearted with plenty of positives. In the forwards, Jack Beddis made a welcome return while Josh Hough and Brodie Matthews were impressive in the tight.
It was not a day for running rugby, but Andy Coleman and Gilbert stood out, while Kay’s kicking game and distribution helped win him the man of the match.
Tough games are coming thick and fast for Ponte, as unbeaten league leaders Old Brodleians now visit Moor Lane this Saturday.
