Sandal RUFC are edged out despite big finish at Middlesbrough
Sandal RUFC’s rescheduled fixture in Middlesbrough was always going to be a well contested game and it did not fail to deliver with the result in doubt right to the final whistle.
It was a much changed Sandal side that made the trip north. They had beaten Middlesbrough at home at the start of the season, but knew they would be in for a test and despite some good play at times and a big finish they lost 29-26, writes Justin English.
Sandal displayed good handling through their backs as they tried to take advantage of the wider pitch and stay out of the heavier conditions.
Good defence also saw them repel Middlesbrough after sustained pressure on their try line in the early stages.

A last gasp recovery from Dec Thompson prevented a sure try from the opposition, however the continued pressure finally took its toll and Middlesbrough took the first score.
Silly penalties conceded put Sandal under more pressure, but great kicking from fly-half Hali Joannou relieved the pressure and Sandal were still very much in the game despite an additional score from their opponents.
A line break from Dec Thompson resulted in a line-out and a rolling maul followed. It was collapsed by Middlesbrough, resulting in a penalty try with Sandal going into half-time 14-7 behind.
The second half continued in a similar vein as the first with neither side running away with it. Middlesbrough moved ahead with additional scores, but strong runs from Harry Jukes and Mac Walsh threatened the hosts so the game felt within grasp for Sandal.

Great forward play saw Cal Burden score under the sticks and the comeback was on.
Harry Jukes scored next after having a man to beat and showing great strength to finish.
Substitute Henry West entered the fray on the right wing and showed why he is such a great emerging talent as he beat the home full-back to score another try from the right.
The momentum was with Sandal and in a thrilling finish with 30 seconds left on the clock they took play to within five metres of the Middlesbrough tryline.
However, an unfortunate knock-on put paid to a grandstand finale and the final whistle blew.
An enjoyable game for the neutral fan and Sandal will take heart from a well contested game, leaving the pitch with their heads held high.
They are at home to second from bottom Penrith this Saturday.
