The Hop and Cobbles to reopen with fresh new look and brand-new live music venue

A much-loved Wakefield city centre pub is undergoing an exciting refurbishment, with a fresh new look, traditional pub atmosphere and a brand-new live music venue set to welcome customers later this month.

The Hop and Cobbles on Bank Street, formerly known simply as The Hop, is currently undergoing work ahead of its reopening on Friday, October 30 from 12pm.

The refurbishment will give the pub a refreshed appearance while retaining the cosy, traditional atmosphere that has made it a familiar name in Wakefield’s city centre.

Visitors can also expect plenty of new additions, including pool tables, dart boards and a new pie menu, giving customers even more reasons to settle in and enjoy a drink, food and some traditional pub entertainment.

One of the biggest changes will be taking place in the former Alter Ego bar, which is being transformed into Backroom, a brand-new live music venue.

The venue will provide a dedicated space for live performances, showcasing everything from grassroots artists and emerging local talent to touring bands.

The launch of Backroom will also see live music return to the venue, bringing The Hop back to its roots following its original opening in 2008.

While the refurbishment represents a significant change for the venue, the focus is firmly on retaining the character and atmosphere of a traditional pub.

A spokesperson for Ossett Brewery said: “We’re incredibly proud and excited about the refurbishment of The Hop in Wakefield.

"For us, it’s about going back to where The Hop began, celebrating its roots in grassroots music, real ale and everything that makes it such a special part of the local community.

"The Hop has always been more than just a pub; it’s a place where people come together, enjoy great music, share a few drinks and feel part of something.

"We want to build on that heritage while creating an exciting space for everyone to enjoy, with the addition of a pool hall and darts alongside the things people already know and love.
