New shops, gym and medical centre planned for Wakefield’s growing City Fields community
Aldi, M&S and Starbucks are among the names lined up for a major new development at City Fields as a Wakefield engineering firm wins work on the scheme.
Wakefield-based HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) has secured work from investment company Asset Capital on the Central City Fields project, a 100,000 sq ft development planned to bring shops, leisure, healthcare and community facilities.
Groundworks are due to begin this month, with the scheme set to offer new amenities for people living in City Fields and surrounding neighbourhoods.
Plans also include smaller retail businesses, a medical centre, a day nursery, a pub and a JD Gyms fitness facility.

It will form part of the wider City Fields development, which is expected eventually to provide more than 2,500 homes, a new primary school, parkland and other public spaces.
HJCE will provide engineering and consultancy services from the early concept stage through to detailed design, supporting the construction of purpose-built commercial units.
The company said the buildings are planned to use low-carbon construction methods.
Director Mark Holloway said the project would showcase the expertise available within the region.

He said: “This is another fantastic project for us to be involved with, seeing us contribute significantly to the delivery of this important strategic site.”
Asset Capital project manager Terry Shaw said the development was important for residents and businesses.
He said: “We’re delighted to be able to bring forward this latest phase of development, as we know how important this will be for local people and businesses.”
