Commissioned by all seven Wakefield Primary Care Networks, the service supports a population of around 401,000.

It offers evening, weekend and bank holiday appointments across seven locations, including urgent and routine GP appointments, nursing care and long-term condition reviews.

Between July 2025 and July 2026, the service offered 124,633 appointments, of which 111,070 – around 89 per cent – were used.

Inspectors praised efforts to respond to local needs, including opening an additional site in Featherstone following patient feedback and analysis of appointment demand.

The report said: “The service was exceptional at ensuring people could access the care, support and treatment they needed when they needed it.”

Inspectors also highlighted work to improve respiratory care.

A project carried out between September 2025 and April 2026 included 274 diagnostic tests, leading to 68 new diagnoses of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and 22 new asthma diagnoses.

Patients identified through the project received medication and self-management plans.

Women’s health clinics were also praised.

The report found menopause referral waiting lists had fallen by 64 per cent, while waiting times for pessary services in secondary care had reduced by 34 per cent.

Patient feedback was positive, with 90.9 per cent reporting satisfaction in the 2026 NHS Friends and Family Test.

For the respiratory project, 94 per cent rated their experience as good or very good.

The service’s leadership was a particular strength, with inspectors highlighting effective governance, supportive leaders and a culture of learning and improvement.

The report said: “The service had a strong focus on continuous learning, innovation and improvement across the organisation and local system.”

Inspectors found staff felt able to raise concerns and were confident these would be listened to.

Lessons from incidents, complaints and audits were shared to improve care, while the organisation had also gained Investors in People accreditation.
