Lidl said the scheme would create 40 new full and part time jobs at the Lidl store and between 105 and 435 jobs at employment/commercial units and two proposed drive thru units.

Lidl want to build the new store opposite the Broadway and Haggs Lane entrances to Dewsbury Road and create a new junction on Dewsbury Road to access the site.

Lidl is seeking residents' views before submitting a planning application.

More than 70 Express readers commented on the story on the Wakefield Express Facebook page.

Susan Meade wrote: "We definitely need a Lidl in Wakefield. Far too many Aldi supermarkets.

Danielle Allbrighton wrote: "Great site but entrance off Dewsbury Road will be complex

Alan Clark wrote: "Its in the wrong place, it should have been on the city fields estate."

Kath Duke wrote: "Glad we finally getting a Lidl."

Celia Lister commented: "Dewsbury Road has really bad traffic and it's always backed up. This will just make it worse."

Hilary Williamson wrote: "Would love to see a Lidl in Wakefield."

The company has leafleted residents with information about the scheme as it seeks people's views before submitting a planning application.

The Lidl website states: "Before a planning application for the proposals is submitted to Wakefield Metropolitan District Council, we would like to know what the local community thinks."

Lidl said all comments should be made by 13 September 2026.

Lidl currently operates food stores in Wakefield district - including Ossett, Featherstone and Castleford - but is yet to open one in Wakefield.
