Travellers leave Thornes Park as camp set up on Westgate
Travellers have set up camp on the old Westgate railway station car park in Wakefield city centre
At least seven caravans were parked up on the car park on Monday morning.
A Wakefield Council spokesperson said: “We are aware of an unauthorised encampment of travellers on Westgate car park. “We have visited the site and have started legal action to move them on as quickly as possible.”
Coun Sam Harvey (Reform/Wakefield West) said an unauthorised traveller camp was set up at Thornes Park on Friday August 28.

She said police visited the park on Saturday morning and the travellers left on Sunday afternoon.
Coun Harvey said: “I am pleased to share that the unauthorised encampment at Thornes Park has now been peacefully resolved.
"Thanks to a swift, coordinated partnership between Wakefield Council, West Yorkshire Police, and our community and groups, the site was vacated smoothly, without damage, and left clean.
"This outcome is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together calmly and methodically.
"As the authority with primary responsibility for our public land, Wakefield Council must strictly adhere to the rigorous laws governing these situations, working in close liaison with the police and other key stakeholders to ensure all actions are legally sound.
"Looking forward, we remain entirely committed to protecting this cherished space.
"Much work has already been done to secure our boundaries using large tree logs, heavy chains, locks, and engineered barriers.
"Moving forward, a coordinated partnership approach with council officers, the police, and the community will continue to drive further efforts to secure the park."
