An unauthorised camp was set up on Grasmere Playing Fields in Alverthorpe, opposite Aldi, on Sunday.
The travellers had previously been on fields around a mile away, off Alverthorpe Road in Flanshaw, having pitched up there on Thursday night.

Hide AdWakefield Council said on Monday morning it was preparing legal action to move the group on, but by lunchtime the fields were empty and the travellers had departed.
The local authority has previously said that there is growing demand for space to accommodate travellers in Wakefield, but not enough sites for the community to legitimately use.
Police also removed an illegal encampment of around 20 caravans from fields on Ferry Lane in Stanley last month.
It is believed that Heath Common traveller's site, the only designated space for the gypsy community to use in the district, is full and has a waiting list.
The council revealed plans to expand the site earlier this year to address the problem, though that idea has been met with vocal opposition from nearby residents.
