'Don’t let outdated perceptions put you off': Wakefield site manager encourages more women to consider careers in construction
As part of Women in Construction Week, one Wakefield construction worker has shared her experience within the industry.
Women in Construction Week aims to celebrate the achievements, leadership, and impact of women shaping the construction industry today.

Grace Wilkinson, who is an assistant site manager at Taylor Wimpey Yorkshire, hopes that by sharing her experiences working within the housebuilding industry, she will inspire others to follow in her footsteps.
Over the past three years, Grace, who joined Taylor Wimpey as a trainee in 2022, says she can see that the industry is evolving.
She said: “The changes I’ve seen show there is more focus on sustainability, innovation and diversity.
“For anyone thinking of a career in housebuilding, especially women and those wanting to work on site, I would say don’t let outdated perceptions put you off. Construction today is professional, supportive and full of opportunity.
“It’s less about breaking down barriers and more about normalising women in these roles.”
Grace, who lives in East Ardsley, pursued the career because she wanted to work in a practical environment.
“It’s a fast paced role that requires organisation, communication and confidence.” She continued.
“I asked lots of questions, volunteered for additional responsibilities, and made it clear that I wanted to progress. With support from the Production team, I was promoted to assistant site manager. It’s been a learning curve, but an incredibly rewarding one.”
“In five years’ time, I’d love to lead a team, potentially mentor trainees, especially women coming into the industry, and as a site manager deliver high quality finished plots.”
