Tributes paid to former Castleford Tigers player and Leeds school teacher Ian Orum

Pupils and the rugby community have been paying tribute to a former player and school teacher who has passed away.

Ian Orum was a former rugby union and professional rugby league player who played in the 1970s and 1980s, representing his country and also at club level for Bridlington RUFC, Roundhay RFC and Castleford Tigers.

He also taught PE at Leeds schools through the years including South Leeds High School and Carr Manor Community School.

Tributes have been flooding Facebook, including from Carr Manor High School pupils, Castleford Tigers Supporters Club and Bridlington RL Club.

In a statement, Carr Manor Community School's Executive Principal, Simon Flowers, said: "We are so deeply saddened to hear of Ian's passing and all of us here at Carr Manor Community School send our deepest condolences to Ian's family.

"Ian worked with us for many years supporting the pupils in PE and a range of sports clubs. He was a genuine servant to the school who built strong and lasting relationships with a large number of pupils over the years.

"A genuine 'one off' he will be missed by all of us who knew him and worked with him."

Mr Orum's former clubs have also paid tribute to the former player.

Bridlington RC President Neil Arton said: "The club would like to send condolences to his family at this sad time."

Paul Bisby added: "RIP Ian. Great PE teacher and rugby coach at South Leeds High School.

Steph Leia said: "RIP Mr Orum, a credit to Carr Manor High School you were, Sir. Condolences to all his loved ones."

On Castleford Tigers' Supporters Club Facebook page, Paul Burns-Williamson said: "On behalf of the Castleford Tigers Supporters Club can I pass on our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ian for the very sad loss. Our thoughts are with you all at this very sad time."
