Wakefield foodbank helps more than 250 people over Christmas
A Wakefield foodbank that only opened in December had a busy first month and helped more than 250 people in need.
Wakefield Community Fridge, Jamia Masjid Swafia in Eastmoor, offers no-questions-asked food to anyone in need.
It opened toward the start of December and has been helping families over the festive period.
Posting on Facebook, the foodbank said: “In just our first month of operating, Wakefield Community Fridge has supported 256 people - a truly amazing achievement and a powerful reminder of what a community can do when we come together.

"A huge thank you to everyone who made this possible including our dedicated volunteers, the local community, our generous donors and local businesses and partners.
“Your time, kindness, donations and support have turned an idea into real impact for people across Wakefield.
“As we head into the new year and beyond, we’re looking forward to supporting even more people - but we can’t do it without you.
"Please continue to support this brilliant cause, whether by volunteering, donating, spreading the word, or partnering with us.
“Together, we’re making a difference.”
It is volunteer run and is stocked with fresh food donated by residents, local organisations and businesses.
Referrals are not necessary and people can turn up and take what they need.
The foodbank held a giveaway event on Christmas Eve.
The following day, it posted on Facebook: “We are thrilled to share that 105 people were able to pick up delicious items to enjoy over the holidays.
"Thanks to the generosity of local supermarkets like Aldi UK and Sainsbury's we were able to collect surplus fresh produce after they closed for the day. This food, which would have otherwise gone to waste, was made available to the whole community – completely free of charge.
"A huge shout out to Surplus to Purpose for their amazing donation and of course, a massive thank you to all the incredible volunteers who braved the cold weather to make this event happen.
"It's heartwarming to see our community come together in such a meaningful way. This is what it's all about – caring for one another, sharing what we have, and ensuring no good food goes to waste.”
The fridge is open every Wednesday and Sunday 10am to noon.
