Essential repair work to one of the district’s highway structures is to start on Monday.

Major structural concrete repairs are required underneath the bridge in Sandal, which carries Standbridge Lane over Owler Beck between Asdale Road and Barnsley Road.

Work will start on Monday, March 16 and continue for eight weeks.

It will be necessary to restrict traffic by use of temporary traffic signals.

Coun Matthew Morley, Wakefield Council’s cabinet member for planning and highways, said: “The traffic restrictions are required to ensure repairs underneath are carried out safely and we advise motorists to take alternative routes wherever possible.

“We understand that these works can cause inconvenience but we ask people to please bear with us whilst we carry out the essential bridge repairs.”

Wakefield Council is undertaking the work as part of the authority’s capital programme for strengthening and maintenance of highway structures that is being funded by central government through the Local Transport Plan.

Although the restrictions may cause some inconvenience, the council says it is necessary to ensure the safety of the public and those undertaking the works.
