Mr Taylor, of Alverthorpe, got four ‘yes votes’ from judges Simon Cowell, Rita Ora, Cheryl Fernandez-Versini and Nick Grimshaw with a performance of Walk the Moon’s Shut Up and Dance With Me.

But the dad-of-three, who sells ice cream on a tricycle in the city centre, was sent home from the competition at the boot camp stage.

Mr Taylor, 35, said: “The audition was just an amazing experience. The whole of Wembley Arena was on their feet bouncing.

“The noise and the support was just overwhelming. I thoroughly enjoyed it but it just seemed to be over in a split second.”

Mr Taylor’s audition was shown on television on Saturday.

The judges enjoyed ice cream, brought by Mr Taylor , and despite a food fight breaking out between the judges, Mr Taylor did enough to make it through to boot camp.

But he was eliminated from the competition after failing to impress as part of a group of acts who sang Louis Armstrong’s A Wonderful World.

Mr Taylor said: “My Wembley audition was actually in July and then I went to boot camp in August.

“I wish the producers would have left a bit more time between the two but the support I’ve had has been unbelievable.

“Just keeping up with Twitter and Facebook has been a full-time job in itself.

“There have been nights where it’s got to 2am and I’ve still been responding to people.

“My kids think they’re famous as well now because I’ve been on the show but they, and my wife Keely, have been great.

“I can’t thank people enough for their support.”
