Aldaiki strikes twice as Wakefield Athletic share spoils in opener against champions Fryston

Reigning Premiership One champions Fryston AFC were held to a high scoring draw at Wakefield Athletic after twice being forced to fight back to share the spoils in an eight-goal Wakefield Sunday League thriller.

Despite a bright start from the Wakefield team it was Fryston who struck first as Jamie Collinson steered a header in.

They doubled their advantage in the 35th minute, Ogujiefor Chimaraoke surviving an offside appeal to run through and calmly finish.

Athletic continued to stick to their game plan and were rewarded just before the break when fine link-up play between Hammad Ali and Tananka Manhopi saw the latter slip the ball through for Ridhwan Aldaiki to showing great composure to score.

Fryston were then thwarted from extending their lead again in the final minute of the half when Hammad Ali produced a crucial double goal-line clearance.

Wakefield were level within two minutes of the restart. A flowing move involving Josh Harrison, Kane Whitaker, Danny Jones and Hammad Ali worked the ball forward into the box where Ridhwan Aldaiki was waiting to jink past two defenders to smash the ball home.

They then went in front with the goal of the game as defender Luke Maw unleashed a tremendous 45-yard effort that flew into the top corner of the net.

Fryston refused to buckle and hauled themselves level once again through goal poacher Stephen Campbell.

Further drama followed when Wakefield substitute Russell Sanyamandwe created an opening for Kane Whitaker. His charge through on goal ended with him being dragged back, leaving the referee with little option but to award a penalty.

Whitaker dusted himself down and confidently dispatched the spot kick to give Athletic a 4-3 lead in the 77th minute.

However, Fryston found another equaliser when a goal-bound effort was blocked, but the ball fell kindly for Chimaraoke to make it 4-4 with a superb half-volley.

The Procrete man of the match award was shared by Aldaiki, Tanaka Manhopi and Ali.

A strong FC Savs side proved too much for a depleted Wakefield Athletic A outfit as the hosts secured a convincing 5–0 victory in a Premiership Two fixture.

Wakefield started the game with real determination and were the dominant side during the opening 20 minutes, but against the run of play Savs took the lead following a long throw into the box and four minutes later they hosts doubled their advantage when their striker was left unmarked on the edge of the box to score.

Before Athletic had an opportunity to regroup, Savs struck again in spectacular fashion. Their midfielder unleashed a stunning 25-yard effort that flew into the top corner, giving stand-in goalkeeper Luke Barraclough no chance.

Wakefield came out for the second half determined to put things right and immediately began to apply sustained pressure. They thought they had pulled a goal back when Marcus Broadhead found the back of the net, only for his effort to be controversially ruled out by the match official.

Despite Wakefield's continued efforts, the Savs defence stood firm and it was they who scored two more goals.

The final score was harsh on Athletic whose Smiths Window Cleaning Services man of the match went to Saif Zaman, Nathan Smith and Barraclough.

A mighty clash between two strong Championship One sides saw quality shine through as Wakefield Athletic B produced an impressive all-round performance to secure a deserved 4-1 victory over Flockton Reserves.

From the first whistle, Wakefield looked the sharper. Buba Dibaga and Mahamadou Jabbi took control of the midfield and captain Aleks Celebicanin was pulling the strings, repeatedly looking for the runs of Iza Tunkara and Edrissa Konateh.

Athletic went ahead when right-back Reece Bailey made an excellent run forward and produced a sublime cross into the box who set up Dibaga to score.

Changes at the break saw Luke Pickering, Henry Ripley and Ryan Cooper come on and the trio wasted no time linking up and causing the Flockton defence problems.

Pickering struck twice in quick succession and more pressure told again with Ripley unleashing a thunderbolt from around 30 yards out into the top corner of the net.

Flockton refused to give up and were rewarded with a consolation goal with a bullet header beyond keeper Ali Jamegay.

The BDM Engineering Services Ltd man of the match award was shared by Celebicanin, Bailey and Dan Ripley.

Wakefield Athletic C made a disappointing start in Championship Two as they lost 4-0 to Batley Jaguars in difficult, wet and slippery conditions.

Batley took an early lead with a well placed finish from Sufyan Daji and further pressure led to Ryan McLean making it 2-0.

Wakefield stand-in goalkeeper Aaron Dooley thought he had a goal back when his indirect free-kick skidded off the wet surface and found its way into the Batley net. However, with no other player touching the ball, the goal was correctly ruled out.

Dooley was then called upon repeatedly to keep Wakefield in the game and produced a string of excellent saves. But he could not stop Rajeb Raja from making it three and in the second half defender Callum Killian did not have enough time to react and get out of the way of an effort by Kamal Jamine as the ball ended in the net again.

It was not the season opener Athletic wanted, but there were positives to take from the second half response and plenty for the team to build on as the season progresses.

The Procrete man of the match went to Dooley, Christopher Darby and Damion French.
