Injury-time goal knocks Horbury Town out of Vase after midweek FA Cup success

After making a highly encouraging start to the new season Horbury Town have tasted contrasting fortunes in cup competitions in the last week.

Following a 1-1 draw with Golcar United in an FA Cup extra preliminary round tie Town went on to enjoy success in the replay played in midweek, running out convincing 3-0 winners away from home.

All the goals came in the second half with Gibril Bojang, Joe Jagger and Sam Awty on target to earn a place in the next round away to 1874 Northwich.

The tie will be played this Saturday and is expected to provide the stiffest test so far for Darren Barnes’ men.

Horbury go into the game off the back of their first defeat in a competitive match this season when they were unable to follow up their FA Cup success with more in the FA Vase.

At home to Club Thorne Colliery, from the division below in the NCEL, they trailed early on to a Marc Newsham goal and frustrations began to mount, with striker James Cusworth spending 10 minutes in the sin-bin for dissent.

Thorne could have scored more before Town finally settled then went on to dominate for long spells in the second period.

However, they were still behind until the 79th minute when Jagger fired home after good work by one of four half-time substitutes Emmisa Nzondo.

Attempts to push on for a winner were frustrated by solid defending from the visitors and it was Thorne who clinched a 2-1 victory in the first minute of added time as their sub Sam Whitfield found the back of the net.

The draw for the second round of this season's JCP Construction NCEL Cup, in memory of James Hitchcock, has been made with all 20 Macron NCEL Premier Division sides coming into the competition at this stage and will see Horbury Town host Handsworth on a date still to be fixed.

Town are back at home next Tuesday when they host promoted Worsbrough Bridge Athletic in a match between two unbeaten sides in the NCE Premier.
