Norbury’s volley turns tide as West End Terriers hit back to win cup final

Runaway Wakefield Sunday League Championship One leaders West End Terriers came from behind to overcome British Oak 3-1 in the final of the President’s Cup at the Crofton Community Centre complex.

The early end to end exchanges soon developed into two styles of play in action. British Oak favoured the passing and possession play while the Terriers relied on the direct long ball game.

Shane Fryer forced an early top drawer save from the British Oak goalkeeper Finlay McElinchey, but it was Oak who took the lead in the 13th minute from their very first attack.

A free-kick by Dylan Collett was headed back across the Terriers goalmouth by Daniel Glassford and striker Phil Neglein headed in at the far post unchallenged to open the scoring.

Fifteen minutes later Terriers hauled themselves level with a spectacular volley from midfielder Liam Norbury who sent the ball rocketing into the top far corner of the net following a free-kick by Oliver McLoughlin that was cleared into his path.

The game deteriorated into physicality and a dour affair with the teams staying level to half-time.

Seven minutes into the second period, Braiden Barry beat his marker before unleashing a powerful effort which rattled Oak’s crossbar before being cleared to safety.

The Terriers continued to bombard their opponents with long balls at every opportunity, but found the rearguard of Caleb Glossop, Callum Halliday, David Dean and Oliver Marshall competent aerially.

Manager Reece Clark introduced fresh legs in the shape of Connor Wiseman and Toby Jones which proved to the masterful in his side’s late goals against a resilient Oak outfit.

Eleven minutes from time, substitute Wiseman volleyed home following a right-flank corner before turning provider in the dying minutes, setting up fellow substitute Jones who raced clear before drilling a low effort on target.

Oak’s hearts were broken again as this was the second cup final defeat.

The man of the match award, sponsored by Pennines Trophies (Heckmondwike), was won by West End Terriers midfielder Liam Norbury. The match balls were sponsored by Lightwaves Leisure Community Centre.
