Pontefract Collieries in seventh heaven in FA Cup before stunning unbeaten leaders Liversedge

While their league form has been mixed so far this season Pontefract Collieries are really tucking into the cup competitions.

Following an 8-0 thrashing of Parkgate in an FA Cup tie the previous week, Jimmy Williams’ men hit the goal trail again when away to Padiham in a first qualifying round tie in the FA Trophy.

While not quite matching their tally against Parkgate it was another emphatic success for Colls as they came away with a 7-0 win – making it 15 goals in two cup competitions.

And again they shared the goals round with seven different scorers in a team display that was outstanding from the first minute to last.

Despite starting strongly it took them until the 27th minute to open the scoring with Elliott Walker putting away a penalty after Jack Wilson had been brought down.

James Morris doubled the lead before the break from close range after Connor O’Grady had headed the ball across from a corner to the back post.

It took Ponte just four minutes of the second half to make it three as Jack Vann fired home following a long throw into the home box.

Kiyani Clayton broke from inside his own half and rounded the keeper to make it 4-0.

There was no let up as two goals in two minutes followed. First, Alex Pavan rolled the ball home after being set up by Niah Payne then Payne himself was the scorer with a penalty.

The rout was completed in the 90th minute when Ben Middleton headed home.

Pontefract are back to the FA Cup this Friday night, but can expect a much tougher test at Ossett United.

They are back at home next Tuesday when they take on North Ferriby in the NPL East.

In the league Colls hosted Liversedge in a West Yorkshire derby on Monday and were in scintillating form again as they ran out 5-0 winners.

This took the team’s record to one win, two draws and one defeat from their first four matches and lifted the side up to 11th in the table.

After draws in their first two league games Colls came unstuck 3-1 at Matlock Town in midweek when Walker scored their only goal.

But there was no stopping them back on home turf as early season leaders Liversedge – who had won all four of their previous NPL East games – were well beaten.

Sedge started well, but were not in it once Joe Walton had headed into his own goal on 29 minutes.

Three minutes later Walton’s day was to get even worse as he was sent-off after bringing down a forward when deemed to be the last man. From the resulting penalty Walker made it 2-0.

Morris netted from close range to add to the lead just before the hour mark and a screamer from Jack Greenhough then made it four.

Clayton put the icing on the cake when he followed up Morris’s shot to make it 5-0 late on.
