Wakefield Athletic lose out to high flyers as they suffer quarter-final defeat

Wakefield Athletic missed out on the semi-finals in the Wakefield Sunday League’s Premiership One League Cup when they suffered a 4-1 defeat to Fryston AFC.

The tie was switched to Fryston’s ground 90 minutes before kick-off with Athletic’s pitch unfit for play and the hosts were ahead from the 12th minute when possession was won in midfield and a lofted ball over the advancing rearguard was latched onto by Andy Horbury who was able to score from close range.

Athletic had made a positive start with a low driven effort by Sadeeq Miah rattling the wrong side of the Fryston post for a close call.

The Wakefield outfit had another couple of good opportunities and striker Labi Adeniran forced an excellent stop from the Fryston goalkeeper while Danny Young poked the ball ball past the keeper only to see the recovering defender clear the ball off the line.

Jamie Simpson was alert to fire home a third goal after the break when Fryston took advantage of a controversial decision to play on despite a possible handball.

Athletic never gave up and came up with wave after wave of attacks, threatening through Danny Jones, Tobi Ogunleye and Kane Whitaker who forced the home goalkeeper into noteworthy saves.

They were finally rewarded when Usman Mahmood netted from Young’s corner.

In a game that was played on a 3G pitch at Frickley Athletic that beat the elements a team comprising of players recruited from higher status local teams via a transfer protocol proved masterful against this recently formed Athletic outfit who fought gamely to the end.

Luke Ordish, an eleventh hour transfer from Premiership One side Fryston AFC, led the scoring with six goals as the Wakefield team found themselves outgunned.

Both sides made a good start before Athletic’s full-back Adam Langwade conceded a penalty in the tenth minute by hauling down a Sesku striker.

Goalkeeper Tom Allen came to his side’s rescue with a brilliant save, but he was soon to be beaten as Sesku looked potent on every attack and it was not long before the floodgates opened as they raced into a commanding 7-0 half-time lead.

The second half was no easier for the away side as the Sesku outfit proved clinical and free-scoring to notch a further six goals – the 13th goal being a spot kick.

Athletic threw all caution to the wind and went into all out attack in the dying minutes and got a little bit of pride back by getting a consolation goal when Tom Allen assisted Josh Noon who rounded the home goalkeeper and put the ball into an empty net.

On target for Miners were Ordish (six), Jack Eccles (three), Connor Mountain, Ryan Bradley, Ricki Banks and Riley Bolton.
