Groundworks start at Aldi and M&S Foodhall site in Wakefield

Groundworks have started at a long awaited development to include a new Aldi and M&S Foodhall at City Fields.

The Central City Fields project is a 100,000 sq ft development off Neil Fox Way in Stanley.

Starbucks is also part of the plans at the site alongside other smaller retail businesses, a medical centre, a day nursery, a pub and a JD Gyms fitness centre.

Groundworks have now got underway on the site, which is part of the wider City Fields development.

The Express reported last month that Wakefield-based HJ Consulting Engineers (HJCE) has secured work from investment company Asset Capital on the project.

HJCE will provide engineering and consultancy services from the early concept stage through to detailed design, supporting the construction of purpose-built commercial units.

In January, Marks and Spencer revealed plans to leave its store in the city centre and open a new food hall at City Fields.

It said the company's Wakefield city centre store will remain open until the new one opens.

The company said it does not believe its existing store in the Ridings has a sustainable future and will be closed after the new food only store is opened.
