Consultation on carbon capture plan for Ferrybridge waste plants
A new industrial development could mean more than a million tonnes of carbon dioxide captured every year at two waste plants in Ferrbybridge.
The company behind the scheme said it could create hundreds of jobs during construction.
It said the project could capture at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually – gas which would otherwise be released into the atmosphere.
Construction would expected to take at least three-and-a-half years, supporting several hundred jobs during the busiest periods.

Around 45 permanent jobs could be created once the technology is operational.
Residents have been invited to share their views on the plans as part of a consultation by the company.
Enfinium chief executive Mike Maudsley said: “To achieve net zero, the UK needs practical solutions that can deliver carbon removals at scale while continuing to manage the unrecyclable waste our society produces. Carbon capture at Ferrybridge represents an important opportunity to do both.
“Our proposals could allow us to capture at least 1.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year, while supporting several hundred jobs during construction and could create around 45 additional permanent roles once operational.
“I’d encourage people to take a look at the information we have published, come along to one of our consultation events, ask us questions and tell us what they think.”
The two existing plants process around 1.45 million tonnes of residual waste each year and generate a combined 170MW of electricity.
Residual waste is rubbish left over after recycling and other sorting.
The proposed equipment would extract carbon dioxide from the gases produced when waste is burned.
The captured gas would then be prepared for transport and sent for permanent underground storage.
Enfinium consultation is set to run until Wednesday, December 9.
An online webinar will take place on Monday, November 16, from 6pm to 7pm via Zoom.
An in-person drop-in event will be held at Ferrybridge Community Centre, The Square, Knottingley, on Saturday, November 21, between 9am and 1pm.
Residents can view the proposals and submit feedback through www.enfiniumferrybridge.co.uk.
