Last spent 23 years at Hull as a player and on the backroom staff and took charge of the team on an interim basis when Lee Radford was sacked in March, but opted to leave after Brett Hodgson was appointed head coach last month.

He will work alongside Willie Poching who joined Trinity from Hull KR as one of Chester’s assistants at the end of last season.

Last, who is also an assistant to England coach Shaun Wane, said: “I’m really excited about the challenge.

“I obviously had 23 years at Hull FC and that chapter ended in a good fashion, with no bridges burned.

“I spoke to Chris on the phone and he stressed that he wanted to get me on board which is brilliant for me.

“Chris is someone I respect and I love the project and the way he’s looking to do things next year.”

He added: “It’s the right time for me to spread my wings and gain some different experiences, and I don’t think there’s anywhere better for me to do that than at Wakefield Trinity.

“I’m really excited about getting started.”

Chester is “delighted” with the appointment.

He said: “Andy is a great coach who will be a brilliant addition to the club and a great character too.

“I have known Andy a lot of years, spent time with him at Hull FC and we’ve always kept in touch since.

“Andy is a very loyal person and the type of person that fits in perfectly with what we want at Wakefield Trinity.

“He’s looking forward to a fresh challenge, and after 23 years at Hull FC, he can’t wait to get started in a new environment here at Wakefield.

“I am really excited to be working with Andy and Willie Poching, and seeing where 2021 can take us.”
