Wakefield Wildcats secure memorable seven-try success against Leeds Rhinos

WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats produced one of their performances of the Super League season to defeat reigning champions Leeds Rhinos 38-18 at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Monday night.

Richard Agar's men ran in seven tries to comprehensively collect two points and secure just a second home victory from 16 attempts against the Rhinos on home soil in Super League.

The victory ended Leeds' six-game winning run and saw Wildcats gain revenge from defeats against their West Yorkshire rivals in the league and Carnegie Challenge Cup this term.

The hosts, wearing a special green, yellow and white one-off charity shirt in aid of Wakefield Hospice, came flying out of the traps and video refeee Ben Thaler ruled out an Andy Ellis effort in the third minute before giving the green light to Andy Raleigh's try four minutes later, Paul Sykes converting.

It took Leeds ten minutes to threaten the Wakefield line and, after Brent Webb had seen an effort chalked off for obstruction, Stevie Ward intercepted a Tim Smith cross and put Kallum Watkins in at the corner.

It was Wakefield's half, however, and after Ellis saw another effort ruled out for offside and Frankie Mariano came close to scoring, Paul Sykes spun out of a tackle to cross the line and add the extras to edge Wildcats further ahead.

Danny Kirmond scored Wakefield's next try on the half-hour mark and the impressive Sykes made it three from three with the boot to see the hosts 18-4 up at the break.

But two carbon copy tries with minutes of each other on the restart, both big kicks by Kevin Sinfield and both collected by Ryan Hall, got Leeds back into the contest.

That was until a Kyle Wood break eventually saw Danny Washbrook go over the line to give Wakefield some breathing space.

Wood then went over for a try of his own before further scores from Dean Collis and Peter Fox sealed a memorable win for the Wildcats.
