Yorkshire reach Twenty20 Finals Day

YORKSHIRE progressed to the Finals Day of the Friends Life Twenty20 on Wednesday thanks to a thrilling 29-run win over Worcestershire at Headingley.

Captain Andrew Gale, who turned out for his home club Cleckheaton in the Bradford League last Saturday, made 30 at the top of the Yorkshire innings.

Joe Root smashed 65 off just 40 balls, including 11 fours, while David Miller hit three sixes and four fours on his way to 50.

Gary Ballance (46no) and Ossett’s Rich Pyrah (10no) then produced an unbroken 49-run stand for the sixth wicket as Yorkshire closed on an impressive 212-5 from their 20 overs.

Pyrah claimed 2-53 in reply, while there was an outstanding fielding display from Yorkshire was capped by an amazing piece of work which saw man-of-the-match Root catch Worcester batsman Cameron but as he was stepping towards the boundary rope, he flipped the ball back inside for Miller to complete the catch.

There were a few nervy moments for the big home crowd at Headingley but Worcester fell short on 183-6.

It is the first time Yorkshire have been to finals day, which takes place at the SWALEC Stadium in Cardiff on Saturday August 25.

Sky Sports, who are televising finals day live, have confirmed Yorkshire will meet Sussex in the first semi-final at 11am. The second semi between Hampshire and Somerset starts at 2pm.

The final will follow at 6.45pm.
