Stockingate care home in South Kirkby told to improve

A Wakefield-district care home has been told to improve by the health watchdog.

Stockingdale Residential Home in South Kirkby received “requires improvement” ratings from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in the categories of safe, effective, responsive, and well-led.

It received a “good” rating in the care category.

In its report, the CQC said: The service did not always support people to receive safe care and treatment, such as, the safe management of medicines or infection, prevention and control (IPC). The service did not always have safe systems and processes in place to manage and monitor risk to people.

However, the service appropriately involved other professionals to manage risk."

It said there was not always “robust assessment of need process” in place due to lack of effective care documentation.

The report said: “The service did not always provide evidence-based care and treatment for people, such as meaningful activities or monitoring of people’s behaviour.”

Residents and their relatives told the CQC they felt safe with staff supporting them.

And the report noted staff were caring.

It said: “We observed staff to be kind and caring towards people. Staff knew people well and had a good understanding of people’s individual needs, likes and preferences.

"The staff responded well to meet people’s immediate needs. We received mixed feedback from people regarding the staff team.

"People were treated as individuals, and there was supporting documentation in relation to people’s life history, cultural and religious preferences.

"Staff provided largely positive feedback regarding workforce wellbeing.”

The Express approached the home for comment.

A spokesperson said: “Stockingate Residential Home has welcomed recent CQC feedback recognising kind, caring staff, safe staffing levels, and residents who feel safe and respected.

"The leadership team has already begun implementing improvements to strengthen systems and ensure consistently high‑quality, person‑centred care.”
