Plan submitted for 287 homes in Hemsworth

A planning application has been submitted to Wakefield Council for a major housing development in Hemsworth.

The proposals would mean 287 homes built on land east of Wakefield Road and would include one, two three and four-bedroom properties.

A design and access statement supplied on behalf of the developer said: “This includes starter homes for first-time buyers, larger family homes, and accessible bungalows suited to older residents or those looking to downsize.

"This approach aims to make a meaningful contribution to local housing supply while fostering a diverse and mixed-tenure neighbourhood.”

It said “green corridors” were proposed along the northern and western boundaries with the homes set back behind.

"These corridors provide a landscaped buffer between Vale Head Park to the north and Wakefield Road to the west.”

Residents have raised concerns over traffic and local infrastructure should the development go ahead.

A total of 15 objections had been received at the time of publication.

One comment said: “The town of Hemsworth and surrounding villages are already struggling with the demand for schools, healthcare and local amenities without adding the extra pressure of 270 extra homes.

"Thats a minimum of 550 extra people, most households now have two or more cars, and the infrastructure around is at breaking point.”

Another said: “The local road network is already heavily congested, particularly during peak hours.

"The addition of traffic generated by 287 new dwellings would significantly worsen congestion, increase journey times, and raise road safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers.

"There is insufficient evidence that the existing road infrastructure can safely accommodate this increase, and no adequate mitigation measures have been demonstrated.”

The design and access statement said the development would make a “positive and lasting contribution to the local area”.

It said: “The site has undergone a comprehensive design review, developed in close collaboration with the client, the consultant team, and the local authority.

"The outcome is an attractive and well-considered residential scheme that enhances existing features, integrates harmoniously with its surroundings.

"It will expand the local housing choice, offering opportunities for first-time buyers, families, and those wishing to downsize.”
