Former Wren Evelyn, 98, shares wartime memories at care home's D-Day celebration
Residents, relatives and team members at Lofthouse Grange and Lodge Care Home in Wakefield came together to commemorate D-Day with a heartfelt day of remembrance, reflection and storytelling.
The home hosted a Union Jack-themed tea party, bringing residents together to honour the courage and sacrifice of those who served during the Second World War.
Throughout the afternoon, personal memories of growing up during wartime were shared, recalling everything from rationing and air raid sirens to the strong sense of community that helped families through difficult times.
A particularly moving part of the celebrations centred on resident Evelyn Hallas, 98, who proudly shared her experiences of serving in the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS).

Evelyn said she joined the WRNS at just 17 and spent two years carrying out office duties to support the war effort.
With both of her brothers serving in the armed forces, she was determined to do her part for her country.
One of Evelyn’s brothers joined the Army, while another enlisted in the Royal Air Force.
Tragically, her older brother lost his life during the bombing of HMS Ajax, a sacrifice that remains a poignant part of her family’s history.

Reflecting on her service, Evelyn said: "My brothers had gone away to serve, and I wanted to do my bit too. It was important to help in any way you could.”
The D-Day commemoration provided an opportunity for residents to reflect on the events that shaped their lives and to share first-hand accounts of wartime Britain with younger generations.
Home Manager, Krzysztof Bialczyk, said: "Listening to Evelyn’s story and the memories shared by our residents has been incredibly moving.
"Their experiences are a valuable reminder of the resilience, courage and community spirit shown during the war years.

"It was wonderful to bring everyone together to mark D-Day and celebrate the generation who sacrificed so much for our freedom.”
The afternoon was filled with conversation, remembrance and camaraderie as residents enjoyed refreshments beneath a sea of red, white and blue decorations.
The event formed part of the home’s ongoing commitment to celebrating residents’ life stories and ensuring their experiences continue to be shared and remembered.
