Six-year-old hula hoops her way through September to support hospital children’s ward

A six-year-old girl is taking on an impressive hula hooping challenge throughout September to raise money for a hospital children’s ward – the same ward that played an important role in her early life.

Elsie Goodall, from Hemsworth, is aiming to complete 100 hula hoop spins every day throughout September in a bid to raise money for Barnsley Hospital, which cared for her when she was just a few months old.

Elsie was admitted when she was just three-months-old after contracting Covid, spending time on the high dependency ward.

At the time, restrictions meant nobody was allowed to visit her, apart from her mum, Vicky.

Now, Elsie wants to give something back to the staff who cared for her.

“She’s done it completely off her own back," Vicky said.

"She said she just wanted to give a little something back to the children's ward."

Elsie is also following in the footsteps of her older sister Lily, now in high school, who previously raised money for the hospital.

And Elsie is proving to be a natural at her fundraising challenge.

“She is amazing at it,” said Vicky. “I’m so proud of her.

“She has such a caring nature. She makes me so proud.”

Elsie, who attends Grove Lea Primary School in Hemsworth, will continue her hula hoop challenge throughout September as she aims to raise as much money as possible.

For Elsie, it is a chance to show her gratitude to the people who were there for her at the very beginning of her life – while helping other children and families who need their care today.
