Smiles at the starting gate: Care home residents enjoy the buzz of Pontefract Races

Fairwood Fields care home in Pontefract enjoyed a day at the races after two residents revealed their passion for the sport.

When 97-year-old Joan Marshall and Ellen Moxon, 93, were offered the chance to attend OAP Free Day at Pontefract Race Course, they were ecstatic.

Joan, Ellen, and four other residents from Fairwood Fields spent the day in the sunshine watching the horses and placing their own wagers.

Joan said: “I love going to the races, I used to always go with my daughter. It was the best laugh I’ve had.”

Lynn Robinson, then General Manager at Fairwood Fields, said: “It’s so important for our residents to stay connected to the things they love, and days like this really bring that to life.

“We’re lucky to have such a vibrant community like Pontefract where our residents have so many opportunities on the doorstep.”

Residents at Fairwood Fields are now looking forward to their trip to Yorkshire Wildlife Park on May 6.
