Townville soften cruel title blow with progress to national final

It was a mixed weekend for Townville as they quickly got over a huge disappointment in the Bradford Cricket League by setting themselves up for possible national glory in the T20 format of the game.

The Castleford-based team came up with two outstanding performances at Derby to clinch a place in the National Final of the Vitality Club T20 Cup.

Convincing wins over Lindow by 84 runs and Northern by 59 runs saw them win the North Regional finals in fine style and they will now they will take on south area winners St Cross Symondians at Worcester on Sunday, September 20.

After the huge disappointment of seeing their hopes of a first league title potentially washed away a day earlier it was the perfect pick me up.

Townville were up against Liverpool side Northern in the regional final and were put in by opponents who had chased down a Rastrick score of 147-5 to win their semi-final by eight wickets.

But despite losing Matty Race early they responded with Abdul Wahid (27) and Sanoj Darshika (56) putting on 64 from 43 balls for the second wicket.

Darshika’s innings included eight fours and after a brief stoppage for rain, which reduced the contest to 18 overs-a-side, Conor Harvey smashed two sixes in hitting 19 from nine balls and Jack Hughes contributed 18 as Townville finished on 147-6.

Northern were set a DLS target of 151 in 18 overs – which was later reduced to 145 from 17 after another stoppage – and they never threatened to get near after losing their first two wickets without a run on the board to Tom Chippendale who finished with impressive figures of 2-13 in his four overs.

Hughes claimed 3-18 and Race 3-12 with Northern kept to 85-9 in their 17 overs.

In the semi-final Chippendale starred with 4-12 as Lindow were all out for just 77 in reply to 161-7. Hughes (2-21) and Darshika (2-7) also bowled well.

Townville had looked in trouble when reduced to 97-6 with only Race (29) of the top order making an impression, but Liam Collins (36no) and Conor Harvey (26) pushed the score up well.

Saturday had seen Townville’s hopes of a first Bradford League title suffer a cruel blow as their match against Pudsey Congs was abandoned when they were in a strong position.

With rivals Woodlands able to win their game it meant they lost top spot and now go into their final game of the season three points behind.

And with Woodlands set to play bottom side Pudsey Congs they must now be ranked as firm favourites to snatch the Premier Division crown.

Townville were looking well placed for victory against Congs when they had them 119-6 from 34.3 overs before the rain came to leave them frustrated at only taking six points.

Chippendale (3-36) and Usman Arshad (3-42) were the wicket takers.

Methley’s Premier game with Jer Lane was also lost to the weather after the latter had reached 143-2 from 25.4 overs.

Great Preston's hopes of promotion from Division Two suffered a big setback when the weather prevented a result from their game at Streethouse.

They had reached 161-6 from 32 overs, Muhammad Shah making 52 and Oli Baron 37, when play was abandoned.

The six points collected left them fourth, nine behind Hartshead Moor, 26 behind Hunslet Nelson and 30 adrift of leaders Bowling Old Lane with just two games remaining.
