Dewsbury-born footballer Chris Dawson has parted company with Leeds United by mutual consent.

The 21-year-old midfielder’s contract was due to expire in the summer and he is now free to speak with other clubs.

Dawson, a Welsh under 21 international, was once seen as a top prospect in United’s academy and made his senior debut against Derby County in April, 2013 after progressing through the ranks at Thorp Arch.

But although he remained highly rated by Neil Redfearn when he was at the club several injuries and managerial changes have seen him limited to just three substitute appearances since.

Dawson played for United’s under 21s on Monday afternoon after returning from a shoulder injury sustained during the opening month of the season, but he has now exited Elland Road after an agreement suiting all parties was reached on Tuesday.

In a statement on his personal Twitter account, Dawson said: “Today my 15 years at LUFC have come to an end.

“I have so many great memories to take away with me and would like to thank all the staff that have helped me progress throughout my time here.

“I also couldn’t ask for a better group of lads to have played with and I wish them all the best in the future.”
