Electrifying Wakefield Trinity stun in-form Leeds Rhinos to progress in Challenge Cup after power cut delay
Wakefield Trinity produced an electrifying display to stun in-form Leeds Rhinos in a classic Challenge Cup tie at the DIY Kitchens Stadium this evening (Friday).
It was a game that had everything, from superb tries and dramatic moments, to both teams going in front, and throwing their lead away.

And not forgetting an early power outage which put Belle Vue in total darkness for nearly half-an-hour.
In the end, Trin won 22-14 to put them into the quarter finals thanks to a quartet of converted tries from Harvey Smith, Oliver Pratt, Matty Storton and Ky Rodwell having trailed 14-6 after Smith’s early effort.
Pratt’s try, as the half-time hooter blared out in remarkably similar circumstances to last Thursday’s win over Hull FC, was a pivotal moment to give Trin some much-needed momentum going into the second half, in which they kept the Rhinos at bay.
The Rhinos, coming into this fourth round tie on the back of three consecutive Super League victories, were one short of Trin in the try-scoring department, but two of Jake Connor’s conversion attempts were off target.
The power cut arrived barely five minutes into what turned out to be an engaging and dramatic cup tie.
And it didn’t take Wakefield long to reignite when the floodlights were restored to full power, with Smith somehow beating three white Leeds shirts to power over from dummy half.
The lead didn’t last very long, however, with the Rhinos responding with the in-form Maika Sivo diving over in the corner for his tenth try in four games.
A cagey, but highly-watchable, cup tie, was brought back into life from a Leeds perspective when Ash Handley was able to cut back inside just five minutes before the break.
All the danger was coming down Trin’s right hand side. But they did not heed the warning as Sivo went over for his second on the night, and 11th of what is turning out to be an already productive campaign, after Wakefield failed to deal with a high kick.
Then came the déjà vu moment as Pratt, just like in last week’s win over the Black and Whites, scored on the hooter after pouncing on a last-ditch kick forward.
Storton then completed the turnaround after a great run by the returning Tom Johnstone. The winger was back in the Trin 17 for the first time in 2026 after injury.
And Rodwell made the game safe to ensure Trin’s progression into the quarter final draw by going over between the sticks.
