The displays feature the Ackworth Hoard - a collection of 591 coins and an early 17th century painting of Pontefract Castle which has just been restored.

Artist Alexander Keirincx’s painting depicts Pontefract Castle before it was demolished by order of Parliament in 1649.

A refrubishment of the museum was completed in March and includes new gallery lighting installed and a reorganisation of exhibitions.

It has been funded by Wakefield Council and the Arts Council England.

Karen Collins, Wakefield Council’s service manager for culture and sport, said: “We have made a lot of improvements at Pontefract Museum recently and this special exhibition shows what we can now achieve in this space.”

There will also be a Museum at Night event on Thursday, May 14 from 6pm until 7.30pm.
