Wakefield fundraiser set for Race the Sun challenge in aid of kidney wards
A Wakefield family and fitness community are preparing to take on a sunrise-to-sunset endurance challenge next month to raise funds for kidney patients and their families.
The event, titled Race the Sun, will take place on Saturday, June 20, with participants aiming to collectively cover the equivalent distance from Land’s End to John O’Groats through a series of 10km loops between St John’s Health & Fitness and Thornes Park.
The challenge will run for 14 hours, from sunrise to sunset, with runners, walkers and cyclists all able to take part at any level.
Organisers are aiming to raise £5,000 for kidney wards at Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s Hospital, with funds going towards equipment and direct support for children and young adults receiving treatment.

The maximum individual challenge will see participants complete up to 80km across the day, while others will take on shorter distances, including single 10km loops.
Dan Burrow, one of the organisers, said the event was inspired by personal experience of kidney disease within his family, including his son who recently received a kidney transplant.
He said: “Many months ago when we were sitting in Ward 50 watching the staff work 12-hour shifts without enough equipment, we vowed to do our bit when we were in a position to do so.
“Fast forward a few years and it turns out our amazing donor trains at our local gym and the owners’ family have also been deeply affected by kidney disease, so the stars have aligned and we are joining forces to raise as much money as possible.”
He added that all money raised would go towards providing equipment and practical support for families facing life-changing kidney conditions.
On the day, participants will be able to run, walk, cycle or even dance their way around the course.
Dan said: “If you can’t make it and you can spare a £5 we will be posting a link to donate. Whilst my son’s kidney journey will be lifelong, we are really excited to try and do our bit to improve the darkest moments for as many families as we can.”
The event will take place on a looped route between St John’s and Thornes Park, with supporters encouraged to take part in person or donate online.
