About Heckmondwike Grammar School
Heckmondwike Grammar School has a very strong reputation locally, regionally and even nationally as a school which does all it can to support students to achieve the highest grades and progress to the best possible destinations.
The school’s philosophy is based on over 125 years of tradition – once a Heckmondwike student, always a Heckmondwike student – and mutual support can stretch way beyond school years into adulthood.
The school’s strategy involves subject leaders working with classroom teachers to maximise progress, alongside heads of year, form teachers and pastoral support staff to ensure students’ wellbeing. Support from parents and carers is first class and the coherent and united approach works to achieving excellence for all.

All the teaching staff are specialists in the subjects they teach and experts in teaching very able and aspirational students from Year 7 to Year 13.
The Governors are inquisitive, challenging and very supportive. They provide the final piece of the jigsaw which, alongside the motto of ‘Nil Sine Labore’– nothing without work – creates a positive ethos that enables everyone to perform to the highest possible standard.
The success of Heckmondwike Grammar School can be illustrated in many ways: exam outcomes at both GCSE and A level are consistently excellent; there are a plethora of extra-curricular activities centred around the house system; and typically over 80% of students continue in to the Sixth Form, with a similar proportion progressing into high calibre undergraduate courses. However, most importantly, the staff want all of the children who come to the school to enjoy their school days and from this foundation become thoughtful, articulate, confident and responsible members of society.
