Wakefield care home rated Good after safety concerns prompt assessment
A Wakefield care home has been rated Good after a Care Quality Commission assessment found concerns raised about residents’ safety were not substantiated.
Foxwood Lodge Residential Care Home, on Carr Lane in Carlton, was praised for helping residents improve their wellbeing and become more independent.
The CQC said that the safety concerns that prompted the assessment were not found during the inspection.
The home was rated Good overall, with its responsiveness to residents’ needs rated Outstanding. Safety, effectiveness, caring and leadership were all rated Good.

The assessment found residents had made significant progress, with some moving towards supported living after developing skills to manage more aspects of daily life independently.
One resident told inspectors: “Safe? Definitely.”
The report said people had made “significant progress” with their independence, confidence and wellbeing.
Some had increased their involvement in the community, accessed education and prepared for more independent living.
Inspectors observed a “calm, welcoming and supportive atmosphere” and said interactions between residents and staff were “respectful, warm and person centred”.
The report said staff understood residents as individuals and tailored support to their personal histories, interests and aspirations.
Residents were also supported to maintain relationships, follow their cultural and faith preferences and have more say in their daily lives.
Healthcare professionals and relatives spoke positively about the care provided.
The CQC said professionals had praised the progress residents had made and described the outcomes as “remarkable”.
However, inspectors identified improvements needed in medicines management and the oversight of the service.
Some instructions for medicines taken when required lacked sufficient guidance, while records showed medicine room and fridge temperatures had not always stayed within required limits.
The CQC said these issues had previously been identified through audits but had not been fully resolved.
It also found some recording issues relating to incidents and care notes.
The registered manager responded to the inspectors’ feedback by reviewing systems and introducing additional monitoring arrangements.
However, the report highlighted that further improvements were needed to ensure issues were identified and resolved consistently.
Foxwood Lodge is run by Care Worldwide (Carlton) Limited and provides residential support for people with mental health needs.
