New specialist school opens in Wakefield

A new school has opened in Wakefield to provide education for children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities.

Wragby School is based at the former Wakefield Independent School site on Doncaster Road in Nostell.

Lord St Oswald, whose family has been closely associated with the Nostell Estate for generations, officially marked the opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from Wakefield Council, the Nostell Estate and education provider Venn.

Dr Simon Witham, chief executive of Venn, said: “We are pleased to have worked alongside Wakefield Council, Lord St Oswald and the Nostell Estate to deliver this project, creating more opportunities for inclusive education and supporting the young people and families of Wakefield.”

Principal Rachael Law will lead the school as it develops an inclusive learning environment where pupils can build confidence and receive support to reach their potential.

The project aims to strengthen SEND provision in Wakefield and help more children access suitable education closer to home.
